In situ
sentral periferi ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ortspezifisch angelegt, inspiriert von unserem ersten Besuchen der Insel auf Google Earth. Zunächst sahen wir kaum mehr als eine Ansammlung von Felsen im Atlantischen Ozean. Bei näherer Betrachtung stellten wir aber fest, dass grosse Teile der Insel mit Konstruktionen aus Holz bebaut sind. Holz scheint das Material zu sein, um einen abgelegenen Ort wie diesen zu erschließen. Neben Häusern und Booten gibt es Stege, Rampen und Brücken, die über oder zum Wasser führen. Aber keine Bäume. Holz wurde demnach das Material unserer Wahl und wir beschlossen, weggeworfene oder zur Seite gelegte Bretter zu benutzen, welche wir auf der Insel finden würden. Mit den Brettern und Planken würden wir auch die Farben der Insel sammeln. Wir entwickelten ein dreidimensionales Raster, angelehnt an die für den alltäglichen Gebrauch entstandenen Konstruktionen. Ein durchgehendes, aber unregelmäßig auslaufendes Raster in den Proportionen eines Steges oder einer Bühne.
Zwei Bilder, die in eins fallen: das Überbrücken einer Landschaft und die topografische Erscheinung der umgebenden Landschaft selbst als Synthese von Struktur und Zufall.
Samvirke
Vor Ort, ausgestattet mit digitalen Entwürfen, einem Modell und einem eng bemessenen Zeitrahmen, mussten wir einige der zuvor getroffenen formalen Entscheidungen Schritt für Schritt an die Gegebenheiten anpassen. Die Zugeständnisse an die Bedingungen und Räumlichkeiten haben die Arbeit mitgeformt, was sich für uns als sinnvoll und willkommen herausstellte.
Das Kap
Wir freuen uns darüber, das Projekt nun mit der Installation der Arbeit auf dem westlichen Kap der Insel abzuschließen. Durch partielle Aussteifungen des Rasters nach unten hin konnten wir die Arbeit waagerecht auf dem felsigen Untergrund platzieren. Hiermit wollen wir das von uns entliehene Material wieder zurückgeben, lediglich in verändertem Zustand.
Die weitere Geschichte dieser Arbeit überlassen wir dem Wind, dem Regen und den Wellen.
In situ
sentral periferi is meant as a site specific work in more than just one way. It has been inspired from our visits on the Island via Google Earth. First we saw rarely more than a few rocks in the midst of the Atlantique Ocean but looking closer we realized that most parts of it were covered with wooden constructions. Wood seems to be the material to make this rocky Island accessable. Besides the houses and boats there is runways, landings and bridges to cross or reach the water. But no trees.
We decided to go for wood as material and to use only the thrown away or let aside boards and blanks we would find. By assembling the wood we would also collect the different colours of the Island.
We decided to go for a construction alike the practical ways of constructing things in everyday life. A rigid but irregulary shaped grid, resembling a stage or rack, that would deal with the double image of crossing a piece of landscape and the formation of the surrounding landscape itself as a product of structure and chance.
Samvirke
On site, equipped with digital drawings, a model and a tight time schedule we had to reconsider and change step by step some of the formal decisions taken beforehand. Mainly there was some concessions to be made according to the spatial conditions, which in the end turned out to be very welcome. The shape the piece now has is literally due to the conditions we have found.
The Cape
To finish this project we are happy to place sentral periferi at the western cape of the Island. By elongating the wooden grid downwards partly we have placed it balanced over the rocky ground. By the means of putting back respectfully the material we have taken, merely in a different state of composition.
The further story of this piece will be up to the wind, the rain and the waves.
